The Konstantinovsky Palace ("Palace of Congresses") is not only the architectural centre of Strelna, but also a new symbol of Saint Petersburg. The palace was initially built in the first half of the XVIII century by the order of Peter the Great as a royal residence. In the 20th century this architectural and historic monument was neglected and became ruines.
The beginning of XXI century got really epochal for the Palace. Restoration work unprecedented with respect to scale and terms were started in the end of 2001. The Bolshoy (Large), Karpiyev, Foreliyev (Trout), Tsvetochny (Flower) and Melnichny (Mill) ponds were brought back to life, their lock system was restored and new dams were built. There were built two dozens of bridges including three drawbridges, created four fountains that earlier existed only on the drafts of Nikolo Miketti. The Negotiations Pavilion, an elegant domed building was constructed on the site of the Temple of Water designed in the old times by G.-B. Leblon. Painted plafond, high reliefs and fireplaces are restored in the Marble Hall intended for meetings. In front of the residence the stony parade-ground where the grand princes used to hold military parades and reviews were revived. After the reconstruction a monument to the founder of Saint Petersburg and the Konstantinovsky Palace Peter I was erected in the centre of the parade-ground. This monument is a copy of the statue moulded in 1910 by the best German founders at the request of the citizens of Riga.
The State Complex "Palace of Congresses" combines such functions as a contemporary business centre, historical and culture national park and the State residence. The main events of Saint Petersburg 300th anniversary were held here visited by the most important political and public figures of the world.
